BOX: from the bottom up; redheart, olive, panga panga, redheart

flaws/issues: the purpleheart in view 5 has edge tearout inside the rim where it meets the curly maple in view 4. It doesn't really detract from the beauty of the bowl but it is definitely noticeable both visually and to touch.

The curly maple in view 4 has a series of small gum inclusions. Sometimes I consider gum inclusions to be simply wood character and not a flaw, but in this case I feel that it is more of a flaw and does, unfortunately, detract slightly from the beauty of the bowl.

comments: good woods throughout with a particularly curly piece of curly maple in view 4. The zircote in view 1 has the classic cloud/bubble figure. The wenge in view 6 has an excellent grain pattern and I get to take some of the credit for that since I chose that piece for that position based on the grain direction, knowing that it would turn down the way it did.

The panga panga in the BOX sanded down along the grain lines, which makes for a marvelous light relief pattern of the grain. This occurs because the early growth part of a tree's grain is generally softer than the late grown of that year and thus even pressure will cause more sanding of early growth than of late growth, as happened in this case.

The bocote in view 2 is extremely nice and were it not for the gum inclusions, the curly maple in view 4 would be outstanding. As you can see in view 6b below, the wenge is very dark but does show an excellent grain pattern.

This is a really excellent bowl, but because of the purpleheart tearout and the maple gum inclusions, I've priced it lower than I otherwise would.
