views 4 and 6: mystery wood #145, wenge, BOX

view 5: zircote over curly maple, both backed by yellowheart and all of that over redheart over curly maple, then all of that backed by ebony veneer, padauk, BOX

BOX: top and bottom are zebrawood, left and right sides are yellowheart, jagged lamination in the middle is, from bottom up; mahogany, yellowheart, wenge, curly maple, tzalam

flaws/issues: the purpleheart in view 2 has a crack --- I knew that when I used the piece and used it anyway because it has a nice high-grain figure.

The bocote in view 1 had an unexpected dead internal branch that had rotted out and opened up to a large empty cylinder, which I filled with a glue/sawdust mix. Actually, this piece of bocote is so nice that I probably would have used it even if I had known in advance about the hole. View 1d below shows the filled hole quite accurately and view 1b below shows what a marvelous piece of bocote it is.

comments: Lots of excellent-grained wood in this one and the lamination in view 5 came out looking very good.

You can't really tell it from the pics, but the grain patterns of the pieces of wenge in views 4 and 6 are beautifully mirrored --- I chose (and aligned) pieces that I had hoped would give some approximation of what the final result turned and it turned out even better than I expected.

The purpleheart in views 2 and 8 are a magnificant purple color --- this is purpleheart at its best. The lamination in view 5 is gorgeous (well, I'm biased, but that's my opinion anyway).

All in all, this is on of my better ones and unless you are put off by the filler in view 1, I think you'll agree.
