comments: The burr oak in the upper left is highly chatoyant and is very nicely aligned so that it is quartersawn as seen looking directly into the side of the bowl, thus making a very symmetrical pattern with the large ray flakes that are typical of this species. The staghorn sumac in the upper right is outstanding. The cowtree at the top is perfectly quartersawn as seen from the top and has excellent small ray flakes which are common for this species.

The cross-section of the rim on this one is a circle and the undercutting inside the rim where it meets the central part was a bit of a chore to get right but I like the way it turned out. Essentially, if you just had the rim, you'd have a donut. I really like it and but probably will not do more of this shape because it is a REAL pain to get the turning right where the inner rim meets the flat bottom of the middle.

flaws/issues: The glue line in the middle where the curly maple meets the panga panga has separated just slightly in a way that is not intrusive, but it IS a slight flaw, of the sort that is just unavoidable sometimes when using so many different woods with different expansion characteristics. Somewhat worse, the maple veneer near the bottom of the box has been cracked by a stress fracture and this is quite visible on close examination. These flaws have kept the price low on this one.
