video for bowl C246

C246 --- $75.00

diameter: 7"
height: 2 1/4"
shipping weight: 1lb 4oz (when asking about shipping costs, please don't forget to give me your zip code)

finish: 2 coats of high gloss spar polyurethane (with UV blocker) then 10 thin coats of shellac topped by two coats of clear flat enamel to take the shine off

COMMENTS: I particularly like the undercut rim. That adds a fair amount of work to the turning process but I think it's worth it. Both pieces of staghorn sumac on the rim are particularly nice. The chechem at the bottom is nicely chatoyant and although the flat finish does not show that off the the best advantage you can still see it.

Lots of strong-grained woods in this one including the chechem at the bottom, the zebrawood inside the lower rim, the bubinga along the top right (plus the two pieces of sumac already mentioned)

I ALWAYS POINT OUT ANYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE COMMENTED ON. THESE ARE (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED) THINGS THAT DO NOT DETRACT FROM THE BEAUTY OF THE BOWL, BUT I WANT TO BE SURE I GIVE A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION. SO ...

The lower piece of staghorn sumac had pith inside the rim which immediately sanded almost completely off once I started sanding so there is a very noticeable depression where I finished scooping it out. That is typical of this wood, if you allow pith in the workpiece, and the outside is, as I anticipated, really beautiful, so while this is technically a flaw, it is an expected one because of the piece of wood I deliberately used and since it's on the underside, it does not detract in the least from the beauty of the bowl.
