finish: one coat of natural stain then 3 thin coats of dewaxed shellac then 10 thin coats of semi-gloss polyurethane topped by 2 coats of clear flat enamel to take the shine off. Note that this enamel finish sometimes (including this bowl) has a weird effect on the pics without having a similar effect on the actual bowl. What happens is that the yellow woods become noticeably more yellow (again, in the pics, not on the bowl itself) and white woods take on a yellow tint. If I color-correct the white/yellow, then the reds and purples come out very wrong, so I leave the pics the way they are, but be aware that yellows in particular are slightly more yellow in the pics than in reality.
COMMENTS: This is a real beauty. The bold color contrasts in the middle look great, there are numerous excellent pieces of wood, and the undercut rim was very much worth the extra effort in turning, having produced a very pleasing curvature. The walnut crotch in the lower right is particularly nice and looking across it to the inside of the upper left you see a very swirly grain piece of staghorn sumac that was chosen for that reason even though it has pith-filled knot in it (the pith is punky but that really isn't an issue in such a small piece and the shellac/polyurethane finish has stabilized nicely. That sumac is backed on the outside rim by a great piece of purpleheart with a nice solid, uniform purple color.
I ALWAYS POINT OUT ANYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE COMMENTED ON. THESE ARE (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED) THINGS THAT DO NOT DETRACT FROM THE BEAUTY OF THE BOWL, BUT I WANT TO BE SURE I GIVE A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION. SO ...
