diameter: 9 1/2"
height: 2 1/2"
shipping weight: 3lb 13oz (when asking about shipping costs, please don't forget to give me your zip code)
finish: one application of natural stain then 5 coats of high gloss spar polyurethane (with UV blocker) topped by two coats of clear flat enamel to take the shine off. Note that this enamel finish sometimes (including this bowl) has a weird effect on the pics without having a similar effect on the actual bowl. What happens is that the yellow woods become noticeably more yellow (again, in the pics, not on the bowl itself) and white woods take on a yellow tint. If I color-correct the white/yellow, then the reds and purples come out very wrong, so I leave the pics the way they are, but be aware that yellows in particular are slightly more yellow in the pics than in reality.
COMMENTS: I think this one is really beautiful. I like the boldness of the large amount of yellowheart at the top and the pieces of curly paela on both sides are just gorgeous. The two little ovals of zircote around the rim add a nice touch.
I ALWAYS POINT OUT ANYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE COMMENTED ON. THESE ARE (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED) THINGS THAT DO NOT DETRACT FROM THE BEAUTY OF THE BOWL, BUT I WANT TO BE SURE I GIVE A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION. SO ...
At the point where the two pieces of padauk meet inside the rim at the bottom of the bowl there is a slight indentation where I had to sand out a grain chip-out. Right next to that there is a tiny grain separation. The indentation is visible although not at all obvious and the grain separation is invisible but you can feel it. These do not detract from the visual impact / beauty of the bowl in the slightest but because they are there I have reduced the price slightly from $195 to $165. I really hate having flaws in my bowls but working with segmented wood they are sometimes inevitable since wood is an organic material.
