This bowl is made from a single blank of Honduras rosewood feather crotch** with a small amount of sapwood and is a great example of why I do so few such bowls --- the cost of the wood can be just ridiculous. Nearly as I can tell, today's replacement cost for a similar blank of this size and quality of this rosewood is $100+ (it would be $70 to $90 for non-crotch wood). Since I got it for less than that I'm keeping the bowl's cost down to an amount I could not afford if I were making the bowl today.
** NOTE: the BASE of the bowl is a separate piece of segmented Honduras mahogany
diameter: 8"
height: 3 1/2"
shipping weight: 2lb 14oz (when asking about shipping costs, please don't forget to give me your zip code)
finish: one application of natural stain then two thick coats of high gloss spar polyurethane (with UV blocker) topped by 2 coats of clear flat enamel to take the shine off.
COMMENTS: The crotch only shows up on one side but it's a really neat looking piece of wood with a "feather" crotch figure (also sometimes called "flame" crotch). I turned this thicker than it needs to be so it is quite hefty.
I ALWAYS POINT OUT ANYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE COMMENTED ON. THESE ARE (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED) THINGS THAT DO NOT DETRACT FROM THE BEAUTY OF THE BOWL, BUT I WANT TO BE SURE I GIVE A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION. SO ... there is a small chip-out in the very middle. I could have turned down past it but considered it too minor to bother with. The crotch has some blue stain in it --- that's more wood character than flaw but I'd rather that it wasn't there.
