Sad to say, this bowl was damaged beyond repair while being returned to correct a flaw.

diameter: 9 1/2"
height: 2 1/4"

finish: an application of natural stain and then 3 coats of high gloss spar polyurethane (with UV blocker)

WOODS USED: [SEE DISCUSSION ON THE MAIN PAGE OF THIS SITE IF ANY OF THIS IS UNCLEAR]

base: canary

view 1: redheart over maple veneer over ? (grainy brown), over ? (orange --- probably paela), all backed by bocote (showing sapwood on the bottom), aromatice red cedar, canary (with a wide streak in the middle of it that looks a little like walnut), BOX. On the left and rigth of view 1 are small wedges of ? (purplish brown)

view 2: bocote, machiche

view 3: ? (tan), hondura rosewood (NOT a true rosewood --- this piece looks a lot like walnut), aromatic red cedar, BOX

view 4: paela, bloodwood, BOX

view 5: on the left chechem, ? (red w/ crack), both over maple veneer then zebrawood and on the right, mahogany then all of that backed by elm?, bloodwood, oak thin, BOX

view 6: paela, bloodwood, BOX

view 7: eucalyptus, cocobolo, aromatice red cedar, BOX

view 8: bocote, machiche

BOX: from the bottom up, purpleheart, wenge, 2 pieces of bubinga veneer, lamination 4 pieces of hard maple veneer and 3 pieces of mahogany veneer, bocote, hard maple veneer, padauk veneer, hard maple veneer, bocote, padauk (unusually grainy pieces), basswood?, osage orange, redheart?, yellowheart, ? (grayish brown wedges pointing down from the top of the box; probably mahogany)

flaws/issues: There is a very slight match slip in the box and it is noticeable where the veneers come together.

MAJOR FLAW: This bowl has developed a very severe stress separation just inside the rim from the left side of view 8 to the right side of view 1. For most of this range you can see completely through the bowl in a line that is about 1/32 of an inch thick. The price has been reduce accordingly, from $175 to $25

comments: There's a lot of spectacular wood in this one, especially the padauk in the box, the canary in view 1, the very bright purpleheart in the box, the cocobolo in view 7, and the paela in views 4 and 6. The canary base doesn't rise to the level of "spectacualar" but it is very nice.

views 1c and 7b --- the appartent striped-ribbon effect in the middle is an artifact of image compression (see view 9 at the top of the page)

views 5d and 8a

view 5c as the bowl blank, raw (fresh off the lathe), with an application of natural stain, and then as the finished bowl. In the pic of the finished bowl, the yellow color in the paela is much too strong --- the wood is beautiful but it is more orange than yellow, as you can see in the other pics.
