N036 --- $45.00 --- this is the orientation view --- more pics down below

NOTE ABOUT CHANGE IN FINISH This bowl developed a small stress separation in one of the laminations near the bottom and in the process of repairing this, I redid the finish in LOW-gloss polyurethane so that the bowl now has the "look" shown in the rightmost image at the very bottom of the page rather than the "shiny, wet" look shown in the other pics on this page. Also, there is now a crack in the meranti of the base, but it does not detract from the beauty of the bowl and to even see it you have to hold the bowl upside down or look directly into the opening from the top.

diameter: 4 1/2"
height: 2 3/4"

finish: one application of natural stain then three coats of high gloss spar polyurethane (with UV blocker) --- now covered by 3 coats of LOW-gloss poly: see note directly above.

WOODS USED: [SEE DISCUSSION ON THE MAIN PAGE OF THIS SITE IF ANY OF THIS IS UNCLEAR]

base/center: meranti with walnut at all 4 corners above the base

view 1: cocobolo, laminate, cocobolo, laminate, sycamore, laminate, sycamore, other, all backed by a laminate

view 3: bullseye from small inward: oak, mahogany, sycamore, mahogany, oak, mahogany

view 5: cocobolo, walnut, maple veneer, walnut, ? (probably yellowheart), walnut, others ?

view 7: mahogany, laminate, doug fir, pine, padauk, other w/ maple on bottom, all backed by a mahogany thin

comments: This started out with a base that would have allowed it to have a goblet shape but the base broke and I made the best of what seemed like a bad situation but actually turned out to be serendipity since I really like the way this turned (no pun intended) out and I plan to do more like it on purpose.

flaws/issues: See note above (in the NOTE ABOUT CHANGE IN FINISH about meranti base crack)

view 8c as bowl blank then raw (fresh off the lathe) and then with a coat of natural stain, then as the bowl now looks after the finish was reworked and changed from the "wet" look to a less glossy coat.
